Abstract

This study was done to detect the change on imagery contents and the meaning of
illness experience related to imagery. The subjects were consisted of 20 patients at two
hemodialysis hospitals. Data were collected from May to July in 1999 using tape recorded
group imagery procedure and written notes. After that, contents were analyzed on change
of imagery contents according to session and the meanings of illness experience.
Change of imagery contents and meanings of illness experience related to imagery were
as follows.
- The themes of imagery were a flower, a conflict problem, a place to wish to go,
forest, and picnic aside a lake.
- The subjects adjusted to the theme of imagery according to session, recognized
positive changes in emotional responses, self awareness, self control, ease of mind, and
felt more relaxed over all.
- The meanings of illness experiences related to hemodialysis on imagery were hope,
expectancy, self strengthening, competence, internal balance, anxiety , isolation,
helplessness, and depression.
Understanding illness experience related to imagery would expand nursing intervention
on hemodialysis patient as well as chronic patients.
